Technology, as we all know is ever changing to cater to the present needs of the industry. This statement has never been more apt than for the communications industry.

After the introduction of the IEEE 1394 interface, known more colloquially as Firewire in the 90’s, its popularity grew immensely, largely due to its data transfer rate of 400 Mbps. USB 1 at the time offered just 12 Mbps. Over the years though, there has been a shifting trend towards the USB interface due to ease of access and generally higher speeds offered.

We had made a comparative study between the different camera interfaces used. Now since the introduction of the USB3 interface, the switch to USB3 from Firewire has become a natural choice for many Camera users. Advantages are numerous such as bigger bandwidth, faster speeds (USB3 offers an astonishing 5 Gbps peak transfer) apart from being more cost effective as well.

Take a look at this document from Basler AG about the complete comparative study between the two interfaces and conclusions.
