What needed solving
Measuring engine blocks by hand was slow and tedious, and the line needed a faster, repeatable check.
How Qualitas solved it
A line-scan camera and line light, calibrated with a checkerboard tile, capture a high-resolution image of the block deck for automated measurement.
At the measuring station
A line-scan camera captures one line of pixels at a time. As the block moves past the camera and line light, those lines build up a single image of the deck far larger than an area camera could capture in one shot.
Calibrating pixels to millimetres
Before measuring, the camera scans a checkerboard tile of known square size. The software uses it to convert image pixels into millimetres.
The result: a 245-megapixel image
The scan produces a 245-megapixel image of the deck, with the bores and deck features sharp enough to measure with 30 µm accuracy. Qualitas has also developed vision measurement of quench height, deck height and piston height.
