Operators counted panel holes by hand, a slow process with a large margin for error. Missing holes could cause problems when components were fitted later.
The solution

A backlight makes each hole appear as a bright spot in an area scan image. Rule-based BLOB detection counts the spots across the panel region of interest.
Inspection setup
The backlight evenly illuminates drilled holes from behind, while a single area scan camera captures the full bottom cabinet panel.
Results
The case study reports an automated count of all 80 holes in under 400 ms, compared with five minutes for the earlier manual count. It identifies the deployment as a demo proof of concept.
