Chamfer Presence/Absence for Ring Orientation.

Our client is an American developer, manufacturer and supplier of products for automotive, commercial, aerospace, marine, rail and off-road vehicles and power-generation applications. With over 53,000 employees, they are ranked 3rd among their top 10 competitors.

Client Name: Harsh Engineers
Ball bearing
Problems faced by our client:

Difficulties in identifying the orientation of the ring on the basis of the presence/absence of chamfer. The chamfer is present only on one side of the ring and hence manually identifying the same has proven to be an error prone task because of human involvement.

Technology introduced by Qualitas Technologies:

Machine vision technology helps in automating, detection of the chamfer. The object is inspected by an area scan camera, preferably a smart camera that has an in-built processing unit inside it. A white square panel light is used to illuminate the Region of Interest. The captured images are further processed in embedded software and the results are displayed in the User Interface.

Our solution:

The setup consists of a smart camera and an illumination aiding device. Verify pattern tool is used to see the presence/absence of chamfer and edge based approach is used to verify the pattern. The presence of the chamfer would give a broader edge compared to the side on there is no presence of chamfer. This enables in clear identification of presence/absence of chamfer.

Conclusion:
Automated bearing cage inspection, automated vision inspection

The presence and absence of chamfer was easily recognizable.
